Becoming 'illegal'

I wondered how it came to be that the Truckers for Freedom protest became illegal.  News reports give a timeline, and it shows how perilous our Charter freedoms actually are.

On February 2, Prime Minister Trudeau warned that the Trucker’s protest was “becoming illegal.”  On February 11, a panicked Premier Doug Ford declared a state of emergency, stating that the protest in Ottawa was no longer a protest but an “illegal occupation.”  Immediately, Liberal cabinet ministers began chirping that the protest being ‘illegal.’  The media put the word ‘illegal’ in quotes to indicate that it was opinion, not a fact.

On February 11, the city of Ottawa went to an Ontario Superior Court to seek an injunction against all the breaking of city parking by-laws implicit in the protest.  This is separate from the injunction sought and granted – and respected – against horn honking.  I could not find reference to the city of Ottawa’s application being granted.  The Mayor of Ottawa never read the Riot Act to the truckers, perhaps because there wasn’t one.

Then on February 14, Prime Minister Trudeau proclaimed the Emergencies Act and used the extraordinary powers he granted himself to clear the ‘illegal’ protest.

To summarize, Premier Ford, in a panic, labelled the Ottawa protest an ‘illegal siege’, Liberal ministers started chirping ‘illegal’ and this, in turn, was amplified by the eunuchs of the Liberal media.  And just like that, the rights of the truckers under Articles 2 and 7 of the Charter disappeared!  Just like COVID, declare an emergency and rights vanish, like magic!
