Whom to hate?

RE: Vaxxed by Robert Panchyson of Burlington.  Letter to the editor.  The Hamilton Spectator 4 Jan 22.

We’re all being invited to hate the new Kulaks with gusto.  The new Kulaks are the unvaccinated and the unmasked, who are allegedly responsible for all the suffering and misery that are inflected upon us - by the political class!, upon the stern advice of medical “experts!”  That’s a pretty cool dodge: “don’t blame me, blame those kulaks because they forced me to mess with you!”

In Premier Ford’s January 3rd announcement of a return to lockdown and a closure of schools, he said things that contradicted each other.  He said that Omicron is so contagious, that everybody is going to get it.  The lockdown is to buy time to get enough vaccination boosters distributed.  He just admitted that the vaxxing campaign was a failure, and so he’s going to extend it!  If everybody is going to get Omicron, then getting vaxxed or getting boosted is pointless - you’re going to get it anyway!  He justified lockdown measures that are proven not to even slow the spread – which, in Omicron’s case is impossible, by admission, anyway – as buying time, in the face of the empirical evidence to the contrary.  It’s like Pavlov’s dog, rising cases means lockdown!

As with previous lockdowns, Ford failed to take account of the wide disparity in risk based on age.  People over 70 years old need to be protected, but locking low-risk kids (who are more at risk from the seasonal flu) out of school and low-risk people under 60 out of work and out of the enjoyment of ordinary life - doesn’t protect the vulnerable.  The faster herd immunity develops – and it won’t, by admission, be by vaccination! – the sooner the crisis will pass.  And here is Ford trying to delay the onset of herd immunity by locking down again!

Don’t blame the unvaccinated.  Blame the fools and idiots running the province who are completely out of their depth, are drunk on power, and have completely lost their skills at critical thinking, if they ever had them.
