RE: Poilievre’s far-right flirtations continue. Op-ed by Fred Youngs. The Hamilton Spectator 20 Jan 23.
Fred Youngs lacks the common sense and even the decency of a copy-boy. Other people have a right to their opinions, right? Not if you’re Fred Youngs. The only opinions allowed are the approved ones.
Young’s tar-baby in this case is the Frontier Centre for Public Policy, which seems to take the other side of the argument. They rail against “wokism,” and publish essays with titles like “Canada more socialist than Scandinavia,” and “Climate Change Dogma has more in common with fundamentalist religions than science.” The outer reaches of egregiousness is reached in an essay that argues some good came out of residential schools.
But the subject of Youngs’ ire is Pierre Poilievre, for speaking to the Centre! Appalling!! Poilievre is forever blackened by this embrace of Youngs’ tar-baby. The nascent Conservative government has to be destroyed because Poilievre won’t cancel people Young’s think deserve cancellation. (The same rule does not apply to Justin Trudeau, whose embraces of the Chinese Community Party, the Cuban Communist Party, and other unsavory characters around the world doesn’t bother Youngs at all. I’ll bet I can find a picture of Justin in talks with Vladimir Putin! But no matter…)
Young’s opinion wouldn’t mean a scrap save for two things: the first being that Youngs was once a grand poohbah at CBC News. He got to decide what was published and what wasn’t, and you can still see the bot-like repetition of tendentious news stories and narratives in CBC News today. The second thing is that Youngs’ opinion, being published in the Spectator, is further evidence that the Spec is a zombie paper for the Toronto Star, the organ of the church of the Liberal Party.
The CBC is a tar-baby to conservatives. Youngs’ argument that Poilievre’s government
ought to be strangled in its cradle connects his past association with CBC New, and is relevant to the argument that CBC be defended by a Conservative
government. There’re lots of people like
Youngs at CBC News.
