These cartoons may be
offensive, but give it some thought: since no picture of Mohammed is known to
exist (or permitted to exist) how do these people know that it is Mohammed that
is actually depicted in these cartoons?
There are plenty of Arabs named
Mohammed. Any one of them could look somewhat like the guy in the cartoons.
(To me, the Charlie Hebdo cartoons somewhat resemble a cross between Yasir Arafat and the late King Faisal of Saudi Arabia) So, how would these Muslims know that is was their prophet being depicted?
How would the cartoonist know?
Apparently, intentions matter more than facts. If western cartoonists are going to be killed for something, decency requires that they be killed for the right reason. They should be killed not for depicting Mohammed but for ridiculing him.
